Waterproofing, Sealing, and IP Ratings

Salecom is a manufacturer of switches with product range includes toggle switch, rocker switch, slide switch, pushbutton switch, tact switch, key switch, dip switch and micro switch.

Waterproofing, Sealing, and IP Ratings

6. When should I choose a waterproof switch?

If the switch will encounter moisture, splashing, washdown, outdoor rain, dust, or high humidity, evaluate a sealed or waterproof option. Food and beverage equipment, construction machinery, outdoor panels, medical cleaning environments, and handheld devices commonly need an IP rating or localized waterproof structure.

7. What's the difference between IP65, IP67, and IP68?

IP65 means dust-tight with protection against low-pressure water jets. IP67 means dust-tight with protection against temporary immersion. IP68 goes beyond IP67, but the actual depth and duration must be confirmed in the datasheet. Don't select on the rating number alone — also confirm whether the protection covers the front panel only, the whole switch, or the terminal side.

8. What's the difference between panel sealed, process sealed, and environmentally sealed?

Panel sealed protects only the front of the panel; moisture can still enter from behind. Process sealed means the switch can survive soldering and washing processes — it does not mean the switch can be operated underwater. Environmentally sealed is the more complete design that protects both the switch body and against the external environment. Confirm where moisture could enter: front, back, terminals, or housing seams.

9. Can a waterproof boot turn a standard switch into a waterproof one?

A boot improves protection at the actuator, but it doesn't necessarily make the entire switch waterproof. If moisture can still reach the terminals, the back of the switch, or a panel gap, failure is still possible. When waterproofing is required, prioritize a switch with a genuine sealed structure or a stated IP rating — a boot should be one part of the design, not the whole solution.

10. Does an IP67 rating mean a switch can be used outdoors long-term, in the rain?

Not necessarily. IP67 typically describes temporary immersion, not prolonged submersion, and says nothing about long-term UV exposure, temperature-cycling condensation, or corrosion. Outdoor equipment should be evaluated on IP rating, material weatherability, UV resistance, drainage design, and terminal protection together — not on the rating number alone.
