40. What is an IK impact rating, and how does it relate to an IP waterproof rating?

IK is the mechanical impact-resistance scale defined under IEC 62262/EN 62262 — a higher number means the switch can absorb more impact energy; IK10, for example, corresponds to roughly 20 joules, similar to a 5 kg object dropped from 40 cm. IP and IK are separate scales: IP covers dust and water ingress, IK covers mechanical impact, and one doesn't substitute for the other. 42. What do "mechanical life" and "electrical life" mean, and are they the same thing?

Mechanical life is the number of actuations the mechanism can withstand with no load applied; electrical life is the number of actuations the switch can sustain while maintaining proper conduction and contact condition under actual voltage and current — and it's typically lower than mechanical life. Electrical life tends to drop as load approaches or exceeds the rated value, or as humidity and dust increase. Check both figures during selection and translate them into an expected service life based on actual duty cycle, rather than quoting whichever number is higher.

Contact bounce is the rapid, unintended make-and-break that happens at the instant of pressing or releasing a mechanical switch, caused by spring vibration — it's a physical characteristic of mechanical switches, not a defect.
